More than 30 people attended Beef and Lamb New Zealand's Better Beef Breeding workshop at Waikaka Station, Greenvale, recently.

The workshop was hosted by Laurie Paterson and his son Ross, of Greenvale.

Those attending heard Christian Duff and Gemma Wilkinson, from Southern Beef Technology Services, Australia, discuss best practice for bull selection, breeding values and simplifying selection with indexes.

Following the discussion, people were put into a mock auction and given pretend budgets so they would apply what they had learned to some of the station's Herefords.

Each decision affected genetic gain and potential money made per animal.
