Two families have been recognised by the New Zealand Grassland Trust for excellence in grasslands farming.

The awards were presented to the Fastier family, from Simons Hill Station, in the Mackenzie, and to the Paterson family, from Armidale, in the Maniototo, at the New Zealand Grassland Association conference in Alexandra.

The Ray Brougham Trophy, a national award for contribution to science, was awarded to Dr Steward Ledgard, of Hamilton, for his work in soil and soil management.

The grassland trust regional award was presented to Beef and Lamb New Zealand central South Island extension manager Aaron Meikle.

That award recognised ''exceptional effort'' above and beyond the normal career contribution that supported the regional pastoral agricultural industry.

Jeff Morton, of Hamilton, received honorary life membership of the New Zealand Grassland Association.
