The annual Southern Rural Life Young Herdsperson of the Year is under way again.

Convener Rob Hall said the young people under 21 who entered the herdsperson competitions in the Wyndham, Winton and Gore A&P shows accumulated points for entering and placing.

The young herdsperson who won the most points from those shows won the title and would receive a trophy, ribbon and $150 - up from $100 last year - from Southern Rural Life.

The runner-up will receive $75.

''They don't have to go to all three shows but if they get placed in all three they are going to have more points,'' Mr Hall said.

Entrants in each handling competition will be judged on presentation of both themselves and their animal, handling ability, and knowledge of the animal and the breed.

''They will be judged on how they parade it, how they present it, grooming and the knowledge aspect.''

The Wyndham show is on December 6, the Winton show is on January 17, and Gore is on February 7. The trophy will be presented at the Gore show.

Last year, Samantha Hall (14), of Stirling, was first for the third year in a row, and Jorja Robertson (13), of Wyndham, was second.
