Maniototo farmers Simon, Sarah, Allan and Eris Paterson received one of two farming awards for sustainable farming practices and community support in the central South Island.
New Zealand Grassland Trust chairman Gavin Sheath said the Patersons were selected because of their excellent farming practices.
''The long-term sustainability is something they have been able to operate and focus on.
''It just looks like they are going to carry on and continue [their farming practices] for many years.''
The award was accepted on the Patersons' behalf by Bevan McKnight.
Simons Hill Station owners Jane and Denis Fastier received the other farming award for innovation in farming systems and leadership in the central South Island region.
Mr Sheath said the Fastiers had given a range of knowledge to the community in the Mackenzie country.
''Here is a group of people that have been very innovative.''
The Ray Brougham trophy, which is a national award recognising contribution to science, was awarded to Dr Stewart Ledgard.
Mr Sheath said he received the award in recognition of his contribution to soil fertility and environmental research and management in New Zealand pastoral agriculture.
Beef and Lamb New Zealand senior extension manager Aaron Meikle gained the regional award for exceptional effort above and beyond the normal career contribution.
It recognised his extension services to farmers and rural communities in the central South Island. Jeff Morton, of the Hawkes Bay region, was made an honorary life member of the New Zealand Grassland Association.
