Sheep and beef farmers must be registered to vote on levy

Beef and Lamb New Zealand is encouraging farmers to check they are registered to vote in the sheep and beef levy referendum that will be held this year.

All sheep, beef and dairy farmers would be able to vote on whether or not to continueto invest in programmes run by Beef and Lamb.

A date was yet to be set for the referendum but chief executive Dr Scott Champion said the organisation intended that the poll would be conducted later on this year.

Under the Commodity Levies Act, farmers voted every six years on whether the organisation should continue.

The proposed levy rates for the 2016-22 period would be defined as part of the referendum offer.

Extensive engagement, including a nationwide roadshow, would be held in advance of the vote, Dr Champion said.
