It was nearly a southern clean sweep in this year's New Zealand ewe hogget competition.

Five out of the six section winners came from Otago or Southland and Hawkes Bay couple Brendan and Prudence Butler were the only northern finalists.

The section winners were: Coopworth, Graeme and Raewyn Black (Gummies Bush); composite, Bevan and Wendy Hopcroft (Wendonside); crossbred, Hamish and Sarah Ottrey (Tapanui); Perendale, Allan and Leeann Woodrow (Waikana); fine wool, Nine Mile Pastoral (Tarras); Romney, Brendan and Prudence Butler (Waipawa).

The competition was judged by Nic Clarke (Patearoa), Preston Hope (Deep Stream) and Stewart Morton (Kimbolton).

Entries were on a par with last year, with 10 flocks in the North Island and 19 in the South Island, and the standard was excellent, competition convener Stephen Rabbidge said.

Judging took eight days and the judges travelled just under 4000km. While it was very demanding, it was also very rewarding, Mr Rabbidge said.

The overall winner will be announced at a dinner at the Chateau on the Park in Christchurch on June 2 and various other awards will also be presented.
