Outram farmer Duncan Wells has a top crop of fodder beet.

It was named most outstanding crop in the environment in which it was grown in the second winter crop growing competition organised by the Taieri Lions and Taieri Rotary Clubs.

About 110 entries were received, comprising a mix of sheep and beef and dairy properties. A field day was held recently to view some of the winning crops.

An auction, held at the prize giving, grossed just over $52,000, one of the organisers, Drew Carruthers, said.

Once some costs were deducted from that, half the proceeds would go to the Otago Rescue Helicopter Trust, 25% to the Otago Youth Adventure Trust and the remainder split between various community groups and projects.

About 250 people attended the prizegiving and it was also a good chance for farmers to have a night out.

''It's all done for a good cause and it's a good get together,'' Mr Carruthers said.
