Classers' field day

The New Zealand Woolclassers Association is holding a field day at the PGG Wrightson Wool store in Mosgiel on Wednesday.

As well as classers, senior wool handlers were also invited with the aim of giving those attending an understanding of what happened to a bale of wool once it left the shearing shed, association executive officer Bruce Abbott said.

The programme would include a presentation by a PGG Wrightson Wool representative and other items to be covered included receiving wool into the store, the importance of good specification, grabbing and coring of bales, taking samples for length and strength, a visit through the wool binning room and a demonstration of the correct way of clipping bales.

About 20 shearing contractors had been approached in the lower South Island and it was hoped to have a good turnout, Mr Abbott said.

The association has about 200 members nationwide, including owner classers who class their own clips.
