An on farm national record price of $100,000 was achieved at the Rangatira Angus bull sale at Muriwai, Gisborne, last week.

Rangatira 13-38, sired by Mt Mable Thor 660, was bought by the Bayly family, from Cricklewood Angus, near Wairoa.

Five bulls sold for more than $37,000 and all 61 of the bulls offered were sold for an average price of $10,969.

Rangatira Angus was founded in 1960 by John and Shirley Dowding at Rangatira, Te Karaka. The stud continued to be run by Charlie and Susie Dowding, who have been breeding Angus stud cattle for many years, initially trading as Rangatira Angus.

In 1999, Mrs Dowding's parents, Colin and Jackie Williams, offered the couple opportunity to farm and breed Kaharau stud cattle at Coventry Station. This year saw the return of the original stud prefix.

Purchaser John Bayly described Rangatira 13-38 as an ''outstanding individual'' who would enhance the stud's breed type and strengthen the breeding programme.

Angus New Zealand general manager Alan Cook said the sale demonstrated the confidence Angus breeders had in the beef industry.
