An inaugural Young Farmers Otago-Southland regional weekend has been declared a resounding success.

The aim was to get Young Farmers members from throughout the region together in one place to communicate, share ideas, build relationships and have a good time.

''Communication is key to any successful organisation or business, so why not have fun while doing it,'' Otago-Southland field officer Leanne Oosthuizen said.

About 35 members took part in the event, which included a mystery bus stop and visiting the Croydon Aviation Heritage Centre, Waikaia gold mine and the Paterson family's Waikaka Genetics, where members got to try their hand at stock judging.

The day's activities ended with a tug-of-war between Otago and Southland, which was won by Otago.

In the evenings, industry partners from throughout the region were invited to meet members.

New Zealand Young Farmers chief executive Terry Copeland spoke about Young Farmers' development and the organisation's future, while OSPRI chairman Jeff Grant outlined his time in the organisation and how much he had seen it change over the years.

A debate, with the moot ''that the Highlanders would be nothing without the Stags'', was won by Southland Young Farmers.

The following day, a shooting competition was held at the Mataura Gun Club, which was won by Garth Sanders, of the Upper Manuherikia Young Farmers Club. Tokomairiro YFC members Nigel Woodhead and Brandon Clarke were second and third respectively.
