A remote corner of Otago high country will be opened to the
public next month when Federated Farmers hosts a field day in
the Nevis Valley.
The Southland branch of the federation's high country section
has organised the March 10 field day through the Nevis
Valley, starting at 9.30am at Ben Nevis Station near
Bannockburn then travelling to Garston in Northern Southland
and on to Lorne Peak Station at Kingston.
Field day organiser Phillip Taylor said farmers in the valley
would talk about its importance and value as summer grazing.
The field day will then move to Mr Taylor's Lorne Peak
Station where he will talk about soil and pasture production
in conjunction with dairy grazing.
Agriculture Minister David Carter and Conservation Minister
Kate Wilkinson have been invited to attend and talk about
relevant issues, while Rabobank senior food and agribusiness
analyst Wendy Voss will also make a presentation.
Access was by four-wheel-drive vehicle only and those
interested in attending should contact Mr Taylor or Bob
Douglas at Federated Farmers in Timaru.
