Prices at last week's South Island wool sale were buffeted by
an exchange rate which had strengthened in the past week.
According to a report by NZ Wool Service International, this
affected some wool types more than others at last Thursday's
Christchurch sale.
Since the previous sale on March 11, the report said the New
Zealand dollar had firmed 1.31% against the main wool trading
currencies but, despite this, 80% of the 9500 bales on offer
at the sale were sold.
Buyers were selective, with some types of fine crossbred wool
falling 1% and others increasing 2%, depending on the
requirements of the Chinese customers.
Good style coarse fleece and shears were in demand, with
prices firming 1.5%, but average and poorer styles, of which
there was a greater volume, eased 2% to 3%.
Lamb's fleece met a similarly varied market, some lots
falling 1.5% and others increasing 2.5%.
The price of oddments ranged from 1% cheaper to 1% dearer.
