Best job: It was a privilege to spend a few days with the kakapo recovery team on Codfish Island this year as they monitored a number of recently released chicks.

Bringing kakapo back from the brink of extension is a marvellous story in itself but it was also neat mixing with the "almost hermit recluses" who spend months at a time in isolation on off-shore islands tending our endangered species.

Worst job: It was nearly my last job! Glancing up at the last second I only just avoided being hit in the head with a half full beer bottle as I was photographing a street fire in Hyde St, following the Rugby World Cup final.

I assume the bottle was biffed by a student annoyed that I was photographing their drunken high-jinks.

To him my message is simple: if you don't want to feature in the newspaper, change your idiotic behaviour.

Photo tip: Delete your failures. Don't show anyone your dross.

Go through your photographs. I often do it on the back of the camera, and cull out all the poor images.

You may be pleasantly surprised at how much other people think your skills have improved.

Otago Daily Times photographer Peter McIntosh chooses 10 of his favourite images of the year.

Best job: Covering local club sport, with the freedom to roam around the sports fields with few restrictions.

Worst job: Witnessing the horrific carnage of the February earthquake in Christchurch.

Top tip: With point-and-shoot cameras, the most valuable thing is to know the potential of your camera.

Best jobs: When a mundane "seen-it-all-before" assignment comes good. Maybe it's a sudden change in the light or the expression of the subject. It's always fleeting but, if you're alert and get it in the can, it's very satisfying.

Worst jobs: Anything involving snow or extended periods exposed to horizontal rain. The annual Jaffa race comes a close second, simply because there is only one, repetitive, angle from which to shoot it.

Photo tip: On sunny days, shoot into the sun. Everyone's had their photo taken in the middle of summer, squinting desperately into the sun. Do your subjects a favour and get them to turn their backs to the sun and turn on your flash (most cameras have a "force flash" or "fill flash" setting).

If the sun is low in the sky, you might need to use your hand to cast a shadow on the lens to avoid lens flare. A dark background will help highlight the subjects. The resulting picture will be squint free, with attractive rim lighting around your subject.
