The perfectly manicured hedge adds to the respectfulness and formality of the funeral of World War 2 hero Eric Batchelor in Waimate. To me this illustrates the real story of the Canterbury earthquake, that people living in a large, modern city had no power, water or sewerage and their streets were covered in sludge. I think the raw emotion on these faces summed up the emotional wringer West Coast families and friends were going through while waiting for news of their men caught inside the Pike River Coal mine. One Greymouth mother's despair. Another shield defeat, but this is the one that hurt the most, especially as my camera says Southland captain Jamie McIntosh was awarded the deciding try despite being short of the line. Surfer Neil Swift, and a random dog, wait for the tsunami to arrive after police closed St Clair beach after the Chilean earthquake on February 27. In the end, the biggest waves were 1m high. Photographers got to shoot one song from the back of the arena, and that was my part in Lady Gaga's tour, the 2010 entertainment phenomenon of the year. He's one of the most famous people in the world, he's flipping the bird with a smirk, and he's staring right at me. The Auckland U2 concert was the fifth time I've photographed showman Bono, and he just keeps getting better.
