I had only a small window of opportunity to get a shot of this rare kiwi, yet it was so dark in the bush it was difficult to focus the camera and expose the image. Two hockey players collide on the McMillan Turf, Dunedin. I spent two hours driving around looking for a severe weather picture and these two women caught in the heavy downpour show the frustration of manoeuvring an umbrella in Dunedin's wind. Even at amateur level, losing a final can be devastating. I picked this one because of the massive joy on the women's faces at winning after about a decade of playing rugby. The irony of this sign was that work was only just beginning after many of Christchurch's streets were wrecked by the terrible February earthquake. Being surrounded by a huge media contingent from around the world as we waited for what was to be the last person rescued from the PGC building in Christchurch after the February earthquake made this photo special. While we did not experience the full force of Christchurch's earthquakes, people from around the world empathised with the tragedy. Here a couple from Belgium comfort each other during two minutes of silence in the Octagon, Dunedin. I couldn't resist taking this picture. Seeing a rat pop its head out of woman's jacket with this logo beside it was just too good to ignore. This picture highlights the strong emotions shown by pupils and their families at the announcements around the merger of Forbury School and Macandrew Intermediate.

Best job: Covering local club sport, with the freedom to roam around the sports fields with few restrictions.

Worst job: Witnessing the horrific carnage of the February earthquake in Christchurch.

Top tip: With point-and-shoot cameras, the most valuable thing is to know the potential of your camera.
