A wandering dog inadvertently led police to a substantial
cannabis haul in Otaki.
Constable Phil Grimstone was driving through an industrial
part of the Horowhenua town when an unrestrained dog almost
ran into his car.
Recognising the dog, Mr Grimstone went to speak to the owner
at a nearby workshop where he was greeted by the "stink" of
cannabis.
A search of the premises yielded enough cannabis to fill six
large police paper sack exhibit bags, he said.
Police also found a 303 rifle and a 12 gauge shotgun.
A 50-year-old man appeared in court facing drugs and firearms
charges and will reappear on May 5.
