Protester arrested after jumping on roof of PM's car

A protester who jumped on the roof of the Prime Minister's car at a Christchurch demonstration has been charged and will appear in court next week.

John Key was in Christchurch for a public forum which anyone could attend and put questions to the Prime Minister.

About 100 protesters turned out at 6pm to welcome Mr Key with shouts of "You can't drink money, you can't drink sh*t, you can't steal our votes and get away with it."

Placards with "let our rivers be" and "stop Key stealing our water" were held up by the crowd.

The protest was in relation to a government decision to replace Environment Canterbury councillors with appointed commissioners.

A 17-year-old then jumped on the roof of the Prime Minister's car, badly denting the roof.

Mr Key was not in the car at the time and the teenager was quickly arrested by police.

He has been charged with intentional damage and is due to appear in court on June 16.

A police spokesperson told NZPA that there were no other incidents at the protest.
