Firefighters believe someone may have died in a suspicious
campervan fire in South Canterbury this morning.
Emergency services were called to a reserve at Hanging Rock,
about 23km southwest of Geraldine, after a passing motorist
noticed the campervan ablaze shortly after 7am.
Volunteer firefighters from Pleasant Point, about 10km to the
southeast, put out the blaze, Fire Service southern
communications shift manager Andrew Norris said.
The campervan was completely burnt out and it was not known
how many people may have been inside.
"They'll just have to sift through the debris," Mr Norris
said.
The fire was being treated as suspicious.
Police and Fire Safety officers were investigating.
