Bay of Plenty police dealt with a number of drink-drivers
over the weekend, including two mothers with young children
in the car and a drink-driver who refused to stop.
A 49-year-old woman was stopped with an alcohol level of 1030
micrograms per litre of breath. The limit is 400mcg.
When stopped on Devonport Rd in Tauranga at around midnight
on Friday she had her 10-year-old son in the car.
Another woman, a 36-year-old Mt Maunganui resident, was
stopped on the Harbour Bridge with her four-year-old daughter
in the car on Saturday night. She had a breath alcohol level
in excess of 560 micrograms.
It was dismaying a parent would put their child at such great
risk and drive drunk, Western Bay of Plenty traffic alcohol
group sergeant Dan Roser said.
"The risks posed by drunken idiotic drivers to other road
users are real, significant and can occur at any time. There
was no way that a person could think they were all right to
drive a car while that drunk," Mr Roser said.
A 21-year-old local man was also arrested when he tried to
escape from a checkpoint at around 11.30pm on Saturday. A
brief pursuit ended when the driver dumped the vehicle at an
off-ramp and ran off.
He was caught by a police dog unit and faces charges of drunk
driving, dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and
failing to stop for police.
