Police are appealing for sightings of a missing Auckland man and are trying to find out how his bank account came to be used in Wellington.

John McGee, 41, from the Auckland suburb of Mount Eden, was reported missing by his family last Wednesday and his bank account was used near Te Papa, Wellington, on Thursday.

Mr McGee does not own a vehicle so it was not known how he travelled to the capital, or even if he did, police said.

Police have established he left the Sky City Hotel in central Auckland about 8.40am last Monday.

He is described as a Caucasian of solid build, with a shaved head and a grey goatie, about 177cm tall and last seen wearing a black Warriors rugby league top, a brown or grey vest, denim jeans and white sneakers.

He has tattoos on both arms, including a tattoo of Morticia from The Addams Family on his right forearm, and has scorpion tattoo on the back of his neck.

Anyone with information should contact police.
