The Eastern Institute of Technology and Tairawhiti
Polytechnic will be merged from January 1, Tertiary Education
Minister Steven Joyce says.
The Government will spend $7.5 million to support the merger.
Mr Joyce said the merger would create one of the largest
tertiary institutions in the country and was an exciting
opportunity for the East Coast.
"It will result in the delivery of higher level
qualifications in the Tairawhiti region which will bring
economic and social benefits for the community," he said.
Tairawhiti Polytech has struggled to maintain financial
viability over the last decade.
Cabinet accepted the proposal to merge the two institutes.
The Governor General's agreement is now needed to
disestablish Tairawhiti Polytechnic.
