A 36-year-old Rotorua woman is dead after she fell off a wharf at the mouth of the Kaituna River, about 40km south east of Tauranga.
The woman was fishing and fell about 6m onto hard sand about 11.30pm yesterday and was unable to be revived, Tauranga police Senior Sergeant Carl Purcell said.
It appeared the woman had stepped over the edge of the wharf while casting her line, Mr Purcell said.
Her death has been referred to the coroner.
