A former Vice-Chancellor's "visionary" efforts to change
Massey University's image by pushing for a new campus in
Auckland have been recognised.
Sir Neil Waters has been awarded the Sir Geoffrey Peren
Distinguished Alumni Award for his achievements, which
include establishing the university's Albany campus in 1993.
Vice-Chancellor Steve Maharey said Sir Neil led Massey
through a period of profound change as Vice-Chancellor from
1983 to 1995, a period when student numbers doubled.
"His push to establish a new campus at Albany, on what was
then the semi-rural outskirts of Auckland, was seen as
visionary," Mr Maharey said.
"It was a bold move for what was a provincial university,
putting the new development in the heart of one of the city's
fastest-growing areas," he said.
Mr Maharey said Massey was considered an agricultural college
before the new campus was established.
Other achievers included Professor Gregor Reid, who received
the Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award for his pioneering
work in microbiology and immunology.
Carl Sanders-Edwards, who owns JumpShift, a company that
provides leadership training using cutting-edge technology,
won the Distinguished Young Alumni award for his leading work
in entrepreneurship.
