Cooling tower steam behind Legionnaires' disease

A Legionnaires' disease outbreak in Marlborough appears to have been caused by steam from a cooling tower, health officials say.

Three men contracted Legionnaires last month, in a region which usually experiences only one case a year.

Nelson Marlborough regional medical officer of health Ed Kiddle said 19 cooling towers had been tested and one contained the same strain of bacteria which infected the men, Radio New Zealand reported.

The three men worked in the same area as the infected tower.

A further six people were being tested for the disease.

The towers had been treated and it was believed the threat was over.
