Helen Clark's mother dies

Former prime minister Helen Clark's mother has died.

Margaret Clark, 87, died at Tauranga Hospital last night after a long illness.

A funeral is planned at her hometown of Waihi on Monday.

She is survived by her husband George and four daughters.

A friend and former Labour Party colleague of Miss Clark said she had been back in New Zealand for a number of weeks to be with her family, with whom she had always been "very close".

Miss Clark has been based in New York since 2009, where she heads the United Nations Development Programme.
