A large earthquake was been recorded on the west coast of the
North Island this morning.
GNS duty seismologist John Ristau said he was analysing a
quake that struck at 7am.
The magnitude 5.7 tremor, recorded at a depth of 200km,
struck 90km south of Opunake, on the west coast of the North
Island.
It was felt widely in the lower North Island and upper South
Island.
A Wanganui Fire Service spokesman said they had no reports of
damage in the 20 minutes following the quake.
"I didn't even know there had been one to be honest,'' said
senior station officer Jemal Weston.
