Wellington police say they are pleased with the overall
behaviour of the crowd at the first day of the Wellington leg
of the Sevens World Series yesterday.
They made eight arrests - all for disorderly behaviour - and
evicted 28 people from Westpac Stadium for smuggling alcohol.
"Those caught smuggling alcohol into the stadium have had
their Sevens tickets confiscated for day two as well. We gave
plenty of warning that this was the consequence, however,
some chose to ignore it," said Sevens operation commander
Inspector Simon Perry.
The New Zealand team booked themselves a quarter-final date
with France this afternoon, breezing through Pool A with
victories over Scotland (29-7), Japan (54-0) and Samoa (19-5)
in front of a noticeably smaller crowd yesterday (fri).
New Zealand's opponents in the round of eight, France, had a
more unconventional route to the playoffs with a win, a draw
and a loss in Pool D.
Surprisingly, Canada topped the tough group D, which also
included Australia and Kenya who will play out for the lesser
trophies tomorrow.
Canada will meet Samoa in their quarter-final after the
Pacific Islanders finished second in Pool A behind New
Zealand with convincing wins over Scotland and Japan.
Tonga were the surprise package of the pool rounds as they
finished first in Pool C after they beat fierce rivals Fiji
17-14 in the group stages.
Fiji did enough to finish second in the pool and will meet
South Africa today, while Tonga earned a playoff against
England.
South Africa looked impressive during the early rounds and
only conceded 10 points in their three pool games.
