A female police officer was knocked unconscious during a
violent assault in west Auckland last night.
Police said the assault occurred after a Henderson unit
started pursuing a stolen car at 10.40pm.
After six minutes the car pulled to the side of the road near
Ranui Railway Station and the four occupants attempted to run
away.
"The male driver of the stolen vehicle then violently
assaulted the female police officer attempting to arrest him,
punching her in the face a number of
times,'' a police statement said.
The officer was knocked unconscious by a punch.
The four then ran from the scene through adjacent properties.
Three of them had since been located and an 18-year-old man
will face charges of aggravated assault in Waitakere District
Court today.
The police officer was kept in North Shore Hospital overnight
as a precaution.
Anyone who has information about the incident was urged to
contact Henderson Police on (09) 837 4953 or Crimestoppers
