A Kaitaia teenager remains in intensive care after the car he
was driving while fleeing police crashed into a house in
Kaitaia.
Nathan Rawiri, 18, is in the intensive care unit at Whangarei
Hospital in a critical condition.
Rawiri allegedly refused to pull over when asked to by police
and later lost control of the Toyota Altezza he was driving
before smashing into a three-bedroom house in Griggs St,
where five children were asleep.
The car went through a fence before ploughing into the house,
which was moved off its foundations, about 1.30am on
Saturday.
An 18-month-old, sleeping next to his siblings and cousins,
suffered a gash to his head from flying glass. A fence pole
flew through the window and landed next to where five
children were sleeping.
Rawiri and a passenger sitting in the back seat behind him
had to be cut free. Rawiri was taken to the Whangarei
Hospital where he was still in a critical condition in the
intensive care unit late yesterday.
