Police have confirmed a police officer has been killed and another wounded when they were shot at in Mangere, in Auckland, early today.

Police spokeswoman Noreen Hegarty said the incident happened at 1.44am.

The officers were involved in an operation, believed to be a P-lab bust, outside a private address in Haine Ave when they were fired upon.

The Armed Offenders Squad is at the scene, which has been cordoned off.

The wounded officer was admitted to Middlemore Hospital and his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening, Ms Hegarty said.

Both officers were part of the Auckland Metro Crime and Operations Service (AMCOS), a region-wide service that incorporates a number of specialist police units and which is based in Otahuhu.

Next of kin of the deceased officer were still to be contacted.

Several vehicles were being sought in relation to the incident.
