Older Kiwis having unsafe sex

Older New Zealanders are having lots of sex but most aren't doing it safely, a survey has revealed.

The online survey of more than 730 people aged 50 and over shows almost four-fifths, or 78.5 percent, never use condoms and almost a fifth, or 17.9 percent, use them only sometimes.

It also reveals older New Zealanders are having plenty of sex, with 51.6 percent getting some action at least once or more a week and 4.1 percent at least once a day.

The self-selecting survey was conducted by GrownUps.co.nz - an online community for people aged 50 and over.

Website co-founder Richard Poole said the rising divorce rate could be leading to more casual sex, but that was no reason to not use condoms.

He warned there had been an increase in sexually transmitted infections among people aged 50 or more in recent years.

"It's quite obvious that the over-fifties are having a lot of sex, but it's important to make sure you know your partner has had a sexual warrant of fitness."

The survey reveals older people are still up for a bit of adventure in the bedroom.

Just over half have used sex toys, 17.9 percent have had sex with more than one partner at the same time, 53.5 percent have had sex with someone 10 or more years older or younger, and 17.9 percent of straight people have had a same-sex encounter.

Not all older people are sexually active, though, with 11.5 percent saying they never have sex and 14.3 percent saying they have it only a few times a year.

Early morning might be a good time to try for those missing out, with 31.7 percent reporting it as their favourite time of the day for a bit of a snuggle.

They could also try supplements designed to enhance sexual performance or health, which 38 percent of respondents use, or oral sex - which 74.8 percent of respondents enjoy giving and 81 percent receiving.
