School tutor jailed for sexual abuse

A young tutor at an Auckland school who came to New Zealand for the Rugby World Cup has been jailed for sexually abusing boys.

The names of the tutor and the school where he worked have been permanently suppressed to protect the identity of the two victims.

The 19-year-old was sentenced to two years in prison for four counts of sexual connection with a young person and two charges of attempting to do an indecent act to insult.

Justice Pamela Andrews told the High Court at Auckland the two teenage victims were vulnerable and the tutor had taken advantage of his position of trust.

However, she took time off his sentence for his early guilty pleas, which saved his victims the ordeal of going through a trial.

The principal of the school declined to comment.
