Sept 21 - Police are investigating the death of a five-month-old baby girl in Hamilton.
Officers were alerted about 5pm yesterday by ambulance staff who were waved down in the city's eastern suburbs.
The infant was transported to Waikato Hospital in a critical condition but died about 11am this morning.
Detective Senior Sergeant Mark Greene said: "While we first and foremost are supporting the family through a traumatic situation, we need to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding what has occurred.
"The investigation is very much in its early stages. We are undertaking a scene examination and a number of interviews as we seek to understand what has happened."
A post-mortem examination will take place in Auckland tomorrow morning.
