A cyclist was killed in a collision with a car on a Northland
highway this morning.
Emergency services were called to the crash at the
intersection of State Highway 1 and Doctors Hill Rd at
Ruakaka, south of Whangarei, at 10.51am.
Inspector Willie Taylor of police northern communications
said a vehicle and a cyclist had collided.
He did not want to speculate on the cause of the crash but it
appeared to be at a "tricky intersection".
Mr Taylor said the occupants of the car were treated for
minor injuries at the scene.
Further details of the cyclist were unavailable while next of
kin were being informed.
Mr Taylor said SH1 was due to reopen about 2pm after it was
closed this morning.
The crash came about half an hour after a motorcyclist was
seriously injured in a crash in Lower Hutt.
Inspector Ken Climo of police central communications said the
man was taken to Hutt Hospital after he came off a motorcycle
on SH58 on Haywards Hill.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
The road was closed to both lanes of traffic but was reopened
shortly after noon today.
