Body of missing skier found

The body of a skier missing on Mt Ruapehu since Thursday has been found.

The 25-year-old man, a European visitor to New Zealand, is thought to have strayed into an area of steep slopes and rocky terrain and fallen, police said.

His body was found yesterday afternoon at the bottom of a rocky area known as the Pinnacles after a search made difficult by the treacherous terrain and unsettled weather.

The body has been taken to Taumaranui Hospital for a post mortem and the matter has been referred to the coroner.

His name will not be released until his next of kin in Europe have been notified.
