Milford Road reopens tomorrow

A section of the Milford Road closed by a massive slip on Friday will reopen tomorrow at 1pm.

New Zealand Transport Agency area manager Peter Robinson said today a single-lane road had been formed around the slip, allowing workers to continue clearing the site and letting motorists get through to Milford Sound.

"Motorists can expect traffic delays of up to 30 minutes and should factor this into their travel plans," Mr Anderson said.

"Staff at the slip site will take their rest breaks around the peak traffic flow times to minimise disruptions to road users."

Mr Robinson said the road from the Hollyford turn-off to the Chasm would be closed from 7am to 10am each day, and motorists could expect delays of up to 30 minutes on either side of the slip from 11am to 5pm.

Overnight closures were possible in the next few days, and a decision would be made each afternoon after considering the weather forecast.

The avalanche hazard level was low at present due to avalanche activity last week and the absence of new snow, he said.

An estimated 2000m3 of debris had been removed so far, and 500kg of explosives had been used to blast rocks, some of which weighed up to 500 tonne.
