Police are still trying to piece together how a Greymouth man
died while out cycling about 11.30am yesterday.
Initial reports suggested that Brian Flanagan, aged in his
early 70s, had been struck by a car on the South Beach
overhead bridge, but West Coast police area commander
Inspector John Canning said this morning "at this stage of
the investigation we do not believe any other vehicles were
involved."
A post-mortem examination was to be carried out today to
determine the cause of death.
The Greymouth Star understands that motorists stopped and
began to perform CPR on Mr Flanagan as he lay on the road.
Police said in a statement today initial inquiries suggested
he fell from his bike and died soon after.
State highway 6 was closed for a time and traffic was
diverted via Shantytown and the Arorangi Scenic Reserve for
about two hours.
