One hurt in lift explosion

One person has been injured after an explosion in a lift in the Westpac building on lower Queen St in downtown Auckland this morning.

Eyewitnesses saw a man taken into an ambulance holding his ear.

An ambulance spokesman said a man in his 30s was being assessed at the scene after what was described as an explosion was heard in the top of the lift about 11.25am.

"There was no fire, no flames or heat present at that time."

Fire Service northern communications shift manager Tania Matthews said there had been "a small explosion" in a lift on the third floor.

"Another party who was in the lift at the time is now saying that it just appears to be a loud bang."

Ms Matthews said it was not yet known what had caused the explosion.

Representatives from the lift company had been called in to assist.
