John Key says live maggots were the worst things he had to
eat, when he was called up on stage at a Bear Grylls' show in
Auckland tonight.
The prime minister joined the Man vs Wild host and comedian
Rhys Darby onstage at Vector Arena, where Grylls was
delivering a two-hour stage show about his adventures around
the world.
Mr Key told TVNZ's Breakfast today he was in the audience
only very briefly. "He [Grylls] must have known I was there
but I was very much incognito."
"You've got to crunch it," Grylls said before all three ate a
live cricket, to cheers and applause from the crowd.
Mr Key said "the worst thing he gave me was a huhu grub with
a pinch full of live maggots which were wriggling down the
back of my throat."
He said the stunt might help him in the polls, which have
shown his National Party in decline.
"I reckon I might regain one of those points from Bear Grylls
lovers."
Grylls was in New Zealand for two stage shows in which he
recalls his experiences of survival in some of the world's
toughest environments.

of course, bug-eating - was the second of Grylls' two
