An elderly woman struck by a car near Auckland this morning
has died in hospital.
The 80-year-old was hit as she crossed State Highway 16 at
the intersection with Muriwai Rd, opposite Waimauku School,
and was taken to hospital by ambulance in a critical
condition.
Police say the car involved was a Holden Commodore and was
travelling towards Helensville.
The woman's name will not be released until next of kin have
been notified.
Waimauku local Bronwyn Owens said it was a dangerous spot.
"It is a bad intersection for accidents as it is where many
people and children cross the road to get to Waimauku Primary
School."
She said locals had been "pleading" for a proper crossing for
years.
