A head-on crash on one of New Zealand's deadliest stretches
of road has left a passenger in a car dead and a truck driver
in hospital.
The vehicles collided on State Highway 2 at Mangatawhiri in
northern Waikato just before 5.20pm.
Emergency services are still at the scene and the crash is
being investigated by the Police Serious Crash Unit.
Diversions are in place at the intersections of Kopuku Rd and
SH2 and Coalfields Rd and SH2.
There have been more than 200 crashes causing 43 deaths in
the area in the past decade, according to the New Zealand
Transport Agency.
