Teen arrested for shooting at cars

A 16-year-old Hamilton boy was arrested this morning after walking down the middle of the road shooting at passing cars and smashing windows.

Police were called to Whatawhata Road in Dinsdale about 8am after receiving reports of a man shooting at a passing car with a gun and smashing parked car's windows.

"Additional information came to hand that a male offender was armed with a softball bat or a golf club and that a man was lying on the ground in a nearby park,'' Senior Sergeant Andrew O'Reilly said.

Police arrived at the scene and saw the 16-year-old, armed with a variety of weapons, walking towards them.

"Armed police confronted the offender and using voice appeals negotiated his surrender without incident. Recovered at the scene was a softball bat, a knife and a slug pistol.''

The teenager was being interviewed this morning, Mr O'Reilly said, but it appeared alcohol and a domestic dispute with his family played a major role in the incident.

He was likely to appear in Hamilton District Court tomorrow facing a variety of charges.
