Arrest after early morning shooting

A man has been arrested following an early morning shooting in Blenheim.

Ambulance officers were called to a rural property about 5am this morning by a 30-year-old man who said he had been shot in the leg, police said.

The man was in considerable pain and remains in Wairau Hospital, where he underwent surgery for his wound.

A 47-year-old local man was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm following the shooting.

He is to appear in Blenheim District Court tomorrow.

Police said the incident occurred at a house which the alleged offender was looking after.

The victim, originally from Blenheim but who now lives in Christchurch, was visiting.

Police are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident but the investigation is continuing.
