Man critical after Auckland shooting

A young man has been shot in the stomach outside his South Auckland home overnight.

The 23-year-old was in a critical condition when he was rushed to Middlemore Hospital about 11pm.

Detective Inspector Jim Gallagher said the man was standing at the road outside his East Tamaki home when "he was confronted by an assailant who discharged a firearm at him".

A black vehicle with a single occupant was reported speeding away from the scene immediately after witnesses heard the gun being fired.

Officers are conducting a scene examination and canvassing neighbours for information.

Police have appealed for information from anyone in the area, particularly those who live near 35 Eastland Rd.

Anyone with information should call Counties Manukau Police on 09 261 1300 or Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
