A house has been destroyed on Rakino Island in the Gulf
Harbour early today.
Fire crews were called just before 3am, but the house was
well ablaze by the time they arrived, a northern fire
communications spokesman said.
Two crews were sent to the island with portable pumps.
One crew was flown over by helicopter and the other arrived
by police launch.
No injuries were reported.
Rakino Island is 6km north west of Waiheke Island.
There were about 76 properties on the island, but as of 2010,
its permanent population was only about 16.
