Reconstruction of a West Coast bridge washed out by heavy
rain last week remains on track to be completed by Tuesday.
Wild weather washed out a 40-metre section of Wanganui River
bridge at Harihari, south of Hokitika, forcing holiday-makers
to make huge detours.
After flood waters were diverted, contractors started
rebuilding the highway yesterday and it was expected to be
completed early next week, said the NZ Transport Agency.
Work also continues along the banks of the Wanganui River to
divert the water back on to its original course, said a
spokesman.
