Progress in fatal Waihi stabbing case: police

The Waihi Beach property where an expatriate New Zealander was fatally stabbed has been blessed and returned to the family.

As the investigation into the murder of Murray Wilkinson continues into its eighth day, police report good progress.

Waikato district crime manager Detective Inspector Chris Page said the examination of 25 Beach Rd, Waihi Beach, was completed at the weekend.

"The address has now been returned to the family."

Investigators scouring the property and neighbouring sections were assisted by the Auckland-based Police Specialist Search Group.

"During the course of our enquiries over the weekend a number of items of interest have been recovered, including several knives," Mr Page said.

Police continued to have the support of the local community he said.

Many members of the public already helped police by advising them of suspicious objects on their properties while others had helped using more modern methods such as accessing social media sites.

This has helped the police to build up an accurate picture of just who was in the area at the time of the attack on Mr Wilkinson, Mr Page said.

While a temporary police station outside the scene has been removed along with the police presence, members of the public can still access the team either at the Waihi or Waihi Beach police stations.

The public can also contact the investigation team via the Operation Brad crime line, 0800 Op Brad (0800 672723). Alternatively information can be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
