Gay cops not allowed to parade in uniform

Police officers who want to march in next month's Auckland Pride Parade will reportedly not be allowed to wear their uniforms.

Openly gay and lesbian officers had sought official support to march as representatives of the police force.

However, the request has been turned down, GayNZ.com reports.

"Any police who wish to participate in the parade can do so as individuals who pay their own way. Participants will not be in uniform," a police spokesperson told the website.

The position contrasts with that of the Defence Force, which is allowing LGBT people serving with the Army, Navy and Air Force to march in the parade in uniform.

The Auckland Pride Parade with be held on February 16 on Ponsonby Rd.

Yes, really embarrassing

Carlee's right, it's embarassing that gay cops can't march in the Pride Parade in their uniforms.  Heaven forbid there should be a hint that the police force is drawn from all sectors of society.  It might be a good idea while this truth-hiding is going on to require all Maori, P.I. and Asian cops to always use makeup so they look more "normal", i.e. pakeha heterosexuals.  Don't hold back on causing embarrassment, Police HQ - we'll get used to it and learn to love it, won't we?

Really?

For such a forward country that's really quite embarrassing.
