A Pukekohe man killed in a crash yesterday was only metres from his home when the fatal incident happened.
The man, who was the only occupant in the car, died at the scene of the single-car crash on Rutherford Rd about 11.15am, said police.
A neighbour who knew the man "just to say hello to", said he lived with his girlfriend who had been a resident of the street for 20 years.
Police serious crash unit is investigating the cause.
A neighbour reported hearing a car speeding down the road just before the accident.
"My wife was outside and she heard the hot rod hurtling down the road and then she heard a bang. It sounded like it was going very fast," said the man.
No-one else was injured in the crash.
