Three people are dead after two separate crashes in which
vehicles hit trees last night.
Two people were killed when their vehicle hit a tree in
Edgcumbe in Bay of Plenty about 10.50pm.
Both died at the scene.
An 18-year-old woman was also killed when the car she was a
passenger in hit a tree in Napier last night.
The crash occurred on Awatoto Rd, Meeanee, about 11.40pm when
the 18-year-old male driver lost control of his vehicle.
Police said the car travelled through a stop sign and across
an intersection before hitting the tree.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver and a 15-year-old male passenger were taken to
Hawkes Bay Hospital. The extent of their injuries was not
known.
All three occupants of the vehicle had to be cut from the
wreckage.
The national road toll currently stands at 36, compared with
47 at the same time last year.
